    Dark and crusty home-baked sourdough is all well and good, but when a proper bacon sarnie is called for, you can do no better than reach for a shop-bought, mass-produced, pleasingly squidgy white loaf. As Nigella Lawson recently admitted, such a creation is ‘one of the great comforts of the world.’
