Tone deaf: Why The Proms is no place to be scoffing popcorn

    Classical music audiences have a reputation – not wholly undeserved – for tetchiness mixed with aesthetic snobbery. Coughing, or the hideous faux pas of a ringing mobile phone, are greeted with freezing glances and pained tutting, while complaints about applause at the wrong moment are a hardy perennial that blooms afresh with each Proms season.
