Lisa Lyon, model and bodybuilder whose work with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe redefined femininity – obituary

Lisa Lyon, who has died of cancer aged 70, was a model and pioneering bodybuilder who became the muse and girlfriend of the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, with whom she set about redefining femininity; she once said that she wanted to look neither masculine nor feminine but like “a sleek, feline animal”, and that the ultimate compliment to her would be for someone to ask: “What planet did she come from?”
