The stock market padded gains at midday Wednesday, but much trading remained on hold until the afternoon when the Federal Reserve is set to announce its rate decision and Fed Chair Jerome Powell holds a press conference. The Nasdaq composite gained 0.7% as it added some room above its 200-day moving average. Volume fell on the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange compared with the same time on Tuesday.
