WASHINGTON—House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) came out forcefully in a closed-door meeting against Republican dissidents challenging his authority, daring them to try to carry out their threat to hold votes to oust him as speaker. A second lawmaker, Rep. Darrell Issa (R., Calif.), confirmed McCarthy said he wasn’t afraid of a challenge and got a standing ovation for his stance. Speaking to reporters after the conference meeting, McCarthy said that he had “showed frustration” because he was “frustrated with some people in the conference” over recent roadblocks.
