Spain’s Guardia Civil evacuated residents and animals from towns and villages on the north of the island of Tenerife as authorities continued to battle out of control wildfires, footage posted on Sunday, August 20, shows.The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, said on Sunday that a calmer night had allowed firefighters stabilize the situation.A little over 1000 people and 310 pets were staying in authorized shelters out of the 12,000 evacuated, the Canary Islands government said. The majority of evacuees had relocated to relatives’ houses, the government said.There were 11 municipalities on the island with evacuation orders, 10 of which were under direct threat from the wildfires, the government said.
