Sydney Opera House marks 50th birthday

    STORY: Officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on October 20, 1973, the Opera House is widely regarded as one of the greatest architectural designs of the 20th century, with 10.9 million people visiting every year.“It's hosted an amazing number of performances and performers over 50 years and at the end of it, it stands today and hasn't really aged,” said Sydney resident Stephen Johnson. “It's just an absolutely iconic building."The building was illuminated with a laser show, created by Australian audio-visual artist Robin Fox, a day before welcoming an expected 37,000 people who signed up for free tours on Saturday (October 21), the first open day in eight years.
