Taiwan holds military drills to defend against the threat of a Chinese invasion

    Taiwan's military began a two-day drill at sea and in the air on Wednesday to practice defending against such a surprise attack. “Any unilateral irrational action could very easily escalate tensions and sabotage stability in the Taiwan Strait region,” Maj. Gen. Sun Li-fang, a defense ministry spokesperson, told reporters at Tsuoying Naval Base in southern Taiwan. Taiwan's defense ministry, in a daily report, said that seven Chinese warplanes and four naval vessels were detected around the island in the 24-hour period ending at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
